Kitten Care Tips for Pet Appreciation Week

To celebrate Pet Appreciation Week this June, you might be thinking of bringing home a new pet. Kittens are a joy to have around and can be a welcome addition to any household. However, there is a lot more to caring for new kittens than playing with them. Keep reading as we cover some of the basics of caring for your new kitten.

Grooming

This may come as a surprise to many new kitten owners, but yes, they do need to be groomed. Brushing your new cat will help with shedding and prevent their fur from getting matted. Also, trimming their nails will prevent their nails from getting too long. If your cat’s nails are not trimmed regularly, they are more likely to begin scratching your furniture. One part of grooming that is often overlooked is dental care. Without regular brushing, your cat can develop gingivitis which can cause eventual tooth loss.

Kitten-Proof Your Home

If you have not heard it before, we are telling you now–kittens are like toddlers. They will put almost anything in their mouths, and they will get underfoot at the most unexpected moments. Therefore, you should check your floors for small items like hair bands and rubber bands, ensure electrical cords are hidden or covered, avoid dangling blind cords, and check before you close any closet or cabinet. Some owners find it helpful to have a bell on their kitten’s collar, but this is dangerous because if it breaks off the collar, your kitten may think it is a toy and accidentally ingest it. It is recommended that you just remain vigilant with your new kitten.

Veterinary Care

The first year with your new kitten will likely involve several veterinary visits. These visits will involve vaccines and booster shots, as well as blood tests to check for conditions like feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Your veterinarian is also a valuable source of information for any questions you have about your kitten.
